MPD Chief Luis LopezChief Luis Lopez has dedicated over 30 years to the Montebello Police Department, demonstrating unwavering commitment to public safety and community service. His career began in 1992 as a Police Cadet, and he quickly advanced through the ranks, holding positions from Senior Police Officer to Captain before retiring in May 2024. In 2024, Chief Lopez returned to lead the department, bringing his extensive experience and leadership back to the Montebello community.

Chief Lopez has served in multiple specialized roles throughout his career, including Field Training Officer, SORT team member, Gang Unit Member, and DARE instructor. His investigative experience includes assignments as a Property Crimes Detective, Crimes Against Persons Detective, and Narcotics Detective. As he progressed in rank, he took on leadership roles in both the Patrol Bureau and Detective Bureau, ultimately overseeing all detective units and the Evidence Bureau.

Chief Lopez has been recognized for his exceptional service with numerous awards, including the Montebello Police Department’s Medal of Valor, Medal of Courage, Medal of Lifesaving, and Medal of Merit. His dedication to excellence in law enforcement and community engagement has earned him widespread respect among colleagues and residents.

In addition to his extensive law enforcement background, Chief Lopez holds a bachelor’s degree in occupational studies and a master’s in emergency services administration from California State University, Long Beach. He also earned a master’s in leadership from the University of Southern California. Passionate about education and mentorship, he serves as an Adjunct Professor at Citrus Community College, where he shares his knowledge and experience with future public safety professionals.

As Chief of the Montebello Police Department, Chief Lopez is committed to strengthening community partnerships, advancing public safety initiatives, and ensuring that the department upholds the highest standards of professionalism and service. His leadership continues to drive the Montebello Police Department forward in its mission to protect and serve the residents of Montebello.
